Diagnostic testing may relieve healthcare costs
Updated: 2009-11-05 22:14:39 CST Category: General Health
by Brendan Missett The Arrayit Corporation, a researcher of pharmaceuticals, genetics and diagnostic testing, plans to help control healthcare costs through early diagnoses of common diseases.
The company has placed an emphasis on personalized medicine which it says will diagnose patients more effectively because it accounts for genetic and cellular differences between individuals and divergence in the ways environmental factors like medication, diet and lifestyle shape health concerns.
According to a CNN report, Arrayit has called the current "standards of care" model "woefully deficient" in its identical treatment of each patient. The company contends that customized health care will lead to early stage diagnostic testing of diseases, resulting in lower health costs on late stage treatments and longer lives.
A vehicle to this type of paradigm shift, molecular diagnostic tests and emerging Variation Identification Platform (VIP) procedures will be able to quickly test large populations through analysis of blood samples.
To date, Arrayit's personalized medical tests include screenings for pre-symptomatic ovarian cancer detection, H1N1 screening, and Parkinson's disease.
According to the National Institutes of Health, clinical tests currently approved for accurate diagnoses include genetic testing, CT scans, blood tests, magnetic resonance imaging and mammograms.
