Fred Hanson, a resident of North Dakota, was told he had prostate cancer approximately two years ago and, thanks to catching it early, is currently doing fine, the North Dakota NBC affiliate KFYR-TV5 reports.
"I found out about it over the phone, which I must say did devastate me at the time," Hanson, who survived the cancer thanks to early detection, told the news provider. "If you're going to get cancer, that's the one to get."
Doctors were able to treat Hanson quickly and administer life-saving treatment before the condition spread further into his body, according to the article.
Dr. Nadim Koleilat, a North Dakota urologist, told KFYR that men between the ages of 50 and 70 should be screened for prostate cancer, and that men a with family history of the disease should screen sooner.
"It's very survivable if it's caught early," Koleilat said.
Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men in the U.S. that affects one in six, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Older men are more likely to develop the disease, which makes early detection important.
Men interested in determining if they have developed the disease can opt for a PSA test and receive the results in the comfort of their own home.
