Study: Knowing cholesterol status best defense for heart disease

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

People who ensure their heart disease risk factors are well below the recommended guidelines through a lab test may have the greatest reduction of risk of developing heart disease, according to a new study.

Because of these findings, which are scheduled to appear in the March 31 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, some medical professionals are calling for stricter guidelines for such factors as blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels, states U.S. News and World Report.

"It is clear that each benefit we have in terms of lowering LDL cholesterol and blood pressure is going to be important, and the lower you get those measurements, the better," said Dr. Stephen J. Nicholls.

Researchers examined the data of 3,437 men's arteries for the volume of fatty deposits in the linings of their blood vessels, which can eventually grow and block blood flow, causing a heart attack or stroke.

Nicholls, along with his research team, found men with the lowest levels of LDL and blood pressure and the least amount of growth of the deposits.

One way to control such risk factors is to get a cholesterol test through a traditional method or by getting an online lab test.
