Study suggests energy drinks may lead to high blood pressure

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

People who suffer from high blood pressure or heart disease may want to avoid drinking energy drinks, according to a new study.

Dr. James S. Kalus and his research team examined 15 health volunteers for the study who ranged from 20 to 39 years and monitored the group's blood pressure and the effect energy drinks had on them.

At first, the baseline blood pressure and heart rate measurements were taken, according to researchers. Then the participants were told to consume two cans of an energy drink. The study found the average heart rate of the adults increased by 7.8 percent on the first day and 11 percent on the seventh.

"Increases in blood pressure and heart rate of the magnitude observed in our study could be significant in persons with known cardiovascular disease," Kalus said.

The researchers made a point to differentiate between energy drinks and sport drinks, which people use to replenish carbohydrates and electrolytes in the body.

In order to avoid developing a serious health condition, people may want to opt to get a blood test to determine if they have any heart conditions.
