Official: Syphilis rates increasing in Missouri

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

State officials in Missouri are reportedly getting worried about the increasing rate of syphilis cases, especially among the younger population.

Ingrid Denney, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Senior Services, said Missouri had 600 cases of syphilis last year, according to the Joplin Globe. She added that the state had managed the levels of STDs in the past, but was experiencing "a pretty good outbreak in the state right now."

If the STD is left untreated, the infection can produce a rash, hair loss and a sore throat, according to the article. Late stage syphilis can negatively affect the nervous system and create mental impairment as well as heart or liver failure.

Denney told the news provider the infection can be cured by antibiotics, provided it's detected early through a lab test. Doctors cannot treat late-stage syphilis.

"Don't depend on symptoms, but get tested regularly," Denney said. "It's a simple blood test."

People who don't want to go to a clinic or a doctor's office for a lab test may want to look into ordering a blood test online.
