While STD rates are generally higher among low-income individuals, a new study suggest that the most effective way to deal with the problem is to simply offer patients an STD test at community health centers, which primarily serve these individuals, along with regular check-ups.
University of California - San Francisco researchers had health workers at community health centers offer the tests when patients came in for primary care visits. The study found that the number of STD test performed by the clinics more than tripled.
Researchers said that their model could be an answer for bringing down STD rates in low-income communities.
"This testing model could be an important feature of the emerging 'test and treat' paradigm, especially if the linkage and referrals to treatment are expanded and strengthened," she told the news service.
The study said more research is needed into the matter, but that the test and treat model could be the simplest way to improve sexual health in many communities.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that STD rates are generally higher in low-income neighborhoods.
