Many people may find the prospect of going to a doctor for an STD test daunting, which is one factor in a new study that suggests home STD testing is the most popular option among women.
The study, conducted by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, found that a vast majority of women, 76 percent, preferred the home testing option over going to a clinic or doctor's office.
Researcher Jeffery Peipert said in the study, published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, that the results may help point to new strategies for increasing rates of STD testing.
"Women overwhelmingly preferred to screen for ST[D]s at home," he said. "Future interventions to increase screening rates in young women should consider alternative screening strategies such as home-based or patient-controlled testing."
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, of the more than one million people infected with HIV, as many as 21 percent may be undiagnosed.
