Doctors say vitamin D deficiency is on the rise

Category: Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment

As increasingly more people protect themselves from skin cancer by wearing sun screen and covering exposed skin, they may also be blocking out the benefits of sun exposure.

Doctors across the country say they are seeing increased incidences of vitamin D deficiency, which can be brought on by a lack of exposure to sunlight.

Though doctors are seeing more patients who could use more of the vitamin, Dr James O'Keefe told the Kansas City Star that awareness of the problem in the medical community is on the rise.

“Upwards of 70 percent of American adults are vitamin D deficient or insufficient,” O’Keefe told the newspaper. “In the last year, awareness of vitamin D deficiency has really exploded."

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a wide range of health issues, including problems with the immune system that can increase the risk of infection.

Studies by the American Medical Association show that just over 24 percent of adolescents may be vitamin D deficient.
