In an effort to increase the availability of prostate testing and get more researchers investigating new treatments, the Prostate Cancer Foundation recently announced it would fund 12 new studies with a combined $3.6 million.
The studies will mainly focus on finding better ways to treat the disease and maybe even cure it.
President of the foundation, Howard Soule, said that the number of men who continue to die from this disease is unacceptable, and that this kind of funding is needed to jumpstart research that could potentially save men's lives.
"We continue to lose an American man to prostate cancer every 19 minutes and more than 192,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year," he said. "New approaches for treating this disease are urgently needed."
The American Cancer Society says that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in American men.
