STD testing can be an effective way to slow the spread of diseases, however many individuals avoid getting tested because they are nervous about the process of testing or finding out that they have an infection.
But many public health departments across the country are working to spread the message that STD testing can be a safe and non-threatening process that can help improve their overall health.
Lashonda Worthey of the Dallas County Department of Health runs a mobile testing unit that goes into neighborhoods to provide free STD testing. She told the city's local CBS affiliate that testing helps the department get a handle on how prevalent the problem is in the city.
"We know if we find one infection, there's five more infections," she told the news source. "So we concentrate on those areas where we see the high morbidity of the disease."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that testing is the best thing that communities can do to slow the spread of STD infections.
