More than one quarter of U.S. teenagers have a sexually transmitted disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of infected teens has been steadily climbing in recent decades, and many health experts say that more STD testing is needed to help curb the problem.
Melinda Salmon, director of a program that offers STD testing to Philadelphia high school students, told the Philadelphia Daily News that testing can have a major impact on the transmission of diseases, because once an infected individual is identified, they are likely to stop their risky behavior.
"We've certainly found and treated a lot of infected kids, and that's very important," she told the news source. "We've also educated a huge number of kids, and while it's hard to quantify, we can't discount the impact that's making."
She added that once a disease is introduced into a population it can be extremely difficult to stop the spread. This makes STD testing even more valuable, as it can help keep infected individuals out of a given population.
