Prostate cancer may increase the risk of colon cancer

Category: Prostate

Men who are being treated for prostate cancer should consider seeking colon cancer testing. According to the findings of a new study, these men are at significantly higher risk for developing pre-cancerous colon polyps than the general population.

Researchers from the University of Buffalo compared colonoscopy results from 188 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer to colonoscopy results from more than 2,000 health individuals.

They found that 48 percent of prostate cancer patients had abnormal colon polyps. For comparison, only 30 percent of healthy men showed signs of the growths. Additionally, these growths were significantly more likely to be pre-cancerous in men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

"Our study findings suggest that patients with prostate cancer should definitely get their screening colonoscopy on time," said Ognian Pomakov, who led the investigation. "In light of the limited resources of health-care systems, a priority should be given to such patients for colonoscopy screening."

Pomakov added that further studies should be conducted to determine if there is a causal link between the two conditions.
