Despite some recent controversy in the medical community over the efficacy of PSA testing, urological experts continue to affirm that the test is the most accurate warning sign of prostate cancer in men. Additionally, its ability to provide an early diagnosis makes it a valuable tool to fight the disease in its earliest stages, when it is easiest to eliminate.
Dr. David B. Samadi, vice chairman of the Department of Urology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City said that there is a well established body of evidence connecting rising PSA levels to increased likelihood of prostate cancer. He said there is little doubt among clinicians as to the benefits of PSA testing.
"High PSA levels indicate that a man has prostate cancer," he said. "Healthcare providers have always known there is a connection between elevated PSA levels and increased odds of developing prostate cancer."
Samardi added that recent scientific findings have served to confirm this link, and that men should consider regular PSA testing to ensure that any potential problems are caught early, while they are still treatable.
