When treating men for urinary tract issues, doctors should always start with a PSA test, according to new guidelines for testing for, treating and preventing benign prostatic hyperplasia developed by the American Urologic Association, according to HealthDay News.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is a condition that affects millions of men. It can result in many symptoms including incontinence that can severely impact a man's quality of life. The new guidelines are intended to help men avoid the problems commonly associated with the condition.
In addition to PSA testing, the recommendations instruct doctors to obtain a full patient medical history, use the association's symptom index and conduct a full medical examination.
"Since the last published guideline in 2003, many new medical and surgical therapies have emerged to help urologists treat men who suffer from lower urinary tract symptoms related to BPH," Dr. David Shin, a urology professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, told the news source.
In addition to helping identify cases of BPH, PSA testing has also been shown in several recent studies to aid in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
