Men who are concerned about receiving a positive PSA test for prostate cancer may not know that many of the risk factors for the disease are entirely within their control, and that making a few simple lifestyle changes can have a major benefit.
For example, aside from genetic risk factors, a poor diet is one of the leading areas that can increase a man's prostate risk. Studies have shown that diets high in fat and calories can increase the risk of cancer, so limiting these food choices can play an important part in reducing cancer risk.
Additionally, certain nutrients may be able to limit risk even further. Experts from the Mayo Clinic say that B vitamins and diindolylmethane may support a healthy prostate. Also studies have shown mixed results from the antioxidant lycopene.
Improving prostate health through lifestyle changes doesn't have to be all sacrifice, either. The Mayo Clinic experts add that drinking alcohol in moderation has been shown to support healthy prostate function and reduce the risk of cancer.
Nearly 30,000 men die from prostate cancer every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While genetics undoubtedly had something to do with these deaths, lifestyle factors also likely played a role.
