Cholesterol medication may do little to reduce death risk

Individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol tests are increasingly being prescribed a class of medications known as fibrates. However, a new study from Western University of Health Science in California questions the real benefits of these types of drugs.

After reviewing the findings of several previous studies, the researchers said that fibrates do appear effective when it comes to reducing triglycerides and raising levels of good cholesterol, according to HealthDay News. However, there appears to be little evidence that they can prevent heart attacks or stroke, which is the main point of improving cholesterol levels.

"In some recent studies, the fibrates, particularly fenofibrate, was not found to reduce the chances of having a heart attack or of saving lives," Cynthia Jackevicius, who led the study, told the news source. "Just because the medicine may improve the cholesterol profile doesn't mean it also decreases the chance of a heart attack or death."

The American Heart Association reports that heart attacks are among the leading causes of death in the U.S., claiming more than 425,000 lives each year.
