The economic recession has had an impact on many aspects of people's daily lives in America, but some experts are saying that it may also be responsible for a spike in the number of positive STD tests.
Donald Brannen, an epidemiologist at the Greene County Combined Health District, told the Springfield News-Sun that many social structures begin to falter during a downturn and that this can play a major role in people's sexual health.
"The more poverty increases, the more divorce rates increase, the more bad things happen on a social level and that certainly would contribute to the transmission of STDs and other diseases as well," he told the news source.
Brannen cited a rising Chlamydia rate in a nearby county as evidence that positive STD tests increase during economic downturns. Officials added that they would continue to try to educate the public on things they can do to prevent the spread of infections.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that regular STD testing is an important part of preventing the spread of diseases.
