Few men enjoy going to the doctor, particularly for issues relating to sexual health. However, a group of experts in Arkansas is warning men that PSA testing for prostate cancer can save their life.
Will Tate, a survivor of prostate cancer, told a group of residents gathered a meeting organized by the Phillips County Hometown Health Improvement Coalition that he was extremely reluctant to visit the doctor for prostate cancer, according to the Helena Daily World.
“For many men, going to the doctor for genitalia health is like saying your manhood will be taken from you,” he told the news source. However, he added that he was grateful when the testing spotted his cancer at a stage that was still treatable.
Prostate cancer is extremely slow moving and may develop for years without presenting any symptoms. When it is diagnosed in this stage doctors may be able to kill the tumor relatively easily. However, if the disease is allowed to progress to an advanced stage it can become deadly.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 30,000 men died from prostate cancer in 2007.
