While there is little consensus about when a man should begin screening for prostate cancer, most medical experts agree that regular PSA testing should play a role in all men's medical care. The procedure can detect growths in their earliest stages while they are most treatable.
Dr. James Moyer, a physician with the Urology Associates of the Poconos, recently wrote in the Pocono Record that PSA testing is particularly important for men who have certain risk factors for prostate cancer. These commonly include a family history of the disease and race. African Americans have much higher rates of the condition.
Even with these risk factors, Moyer added that men should still discuss with their doctor when to begin PSA testing. Every individual has different unique risk factors and the procedure may be more important for some men than others.
Still, nearly 30,000 men died from prostate cancer in 2007, which underscores the importance of getting regular checkups. While prostate cancer can be treated relatively easily when it is caught early, it is often deadly when it is left to develop.
