Many people think that colon cleansing therapies may help clean their system of toxins and reduce their risk of receiving a positive colon cancer test. However, a new study published in the Journal of Family Practice shows that there is little benefit and high potential risks associated with this type of natural treatment.
Researchers from the Georgetown University School of Medicine analyzed the results of 20 previously published studies that looked into the benefits of colon cleansing. The results showed that there are few benefits to the practice. However, there are many potential side effects.
A number of the participants experienced minor problems such as cramping, bloating and nausea. However, other individuals had much more serious health problems. Some experienced renal failure and eventually died. Additionally, some products were shown to have toxic effects for the liver.
"There can be serious consequences for those who engage in colon cleansing whether they have the procedure done at a spa or perform it at home," says Ranit Mishori, the lead author on the study.
