In recent years, the PSA test has come under fire. Some say that it leads to over-diagnosis and over-treatment of tumors that may never become life threatening. Others say there is insufficient evidence supporting its use. Still, most men's health experts say the test is the best tool available for detecting prostate cancer in men.
Dr. Stephen Taylor of Pacific Urology said that without PSA testing, millions of men could be at risk for a potentially life-threatening disease. The procedure diagnoses tumors at a much earlier stage than most other testing methods, which provides men with valuable time to decide how to treat the condition.
Taylor pointed out that up to one in six men end up developing prostate cancer. When PSA testing diagnoses these tumors at an early stage, they are very treatable. However, when they are discovered after growing larger, they can become aggressive and may be deadly. Early diagnosis and treatment is the key to eliminating the tumors.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 30,000 men are killed by prostate cancer each year.
