The number of young people who experience a stroke is rising at an alarming rate, according to a new study out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The finding suggests that individuals should consider cholesterol testing during early adulthood, as unhealthy lipid levels are among the leading causes of strokes.
After examining 13 years' worth of records from patients between the ages of 15 and 44, the researchers found that the number of strokes in this group increased by 37 percent during the study period.
"We identified significant increasing trends in ischemic stroke hospitalizations among adolescents and young adults," said lead author Mary George. "Our results accentuate the need for public health initiatives to reduce the prevalence of risk factors for stroke among adolescents and young adults."
The researchers identified cholesterol levels, diet, exercise habits and tobacco use as risk factors for strokes that need to be addressed. The CDC is currently working with other public and private agencies to design educational programs that may help people make lifestyle improvements in these areas.
