Most of the information about preventing STDs is aimed at young people. After all, the vast majority of new cases of infections occur in individuals between the ages of 18 and 25. However, experts are saying that a disturbing new trend is leading an increase in the number of positive STD tests among older individuals.
Larry Shockley, an STD expert, told local news station WCTV that nursing homes and other elderly care services are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of elderly who have contracted a sexually transmitted infection. Unsafe sexual practices may be to blame for many of these cases.
"They don't have to worry about pregnancy, so a lot of older individuals think, 'Well, I don't need to use a condom,'" he told the news source. However, this is how infections like syphilis and chlamydia are spread.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that about 19 percent of all STD patients are over the age of 50. The agency recommends that sexually active members of the age group seek regular STD testing to ensure they are not spreading infections to others.
