Many men do not think about their risk of prostate cancer until they receive a positive PSA test indicating they have the condition. At this point, their only option may be to undergo surgical procedures that carry a relatively high risk of complications.
However, it may be possible for individuals to reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer as they get older. Experts say that eating a healthy diet is one of the top ways men can support their prostate health.
The Mayo Clinic recommends eating less fat, consuming more fish, increasing intake of fruits and vegetables and reducing the amount of dairy eaten each day. Aside from directly influencing prostate cancer risk, this type of diet may help men maintain a healthy weight, which has also been shown to reduce the chances of developing cancer.
However, the time to adopt these healthy lifestyles is not following a positive PSA test for prostate cancer. A proper diet should be started early on in adulthood in order to reduce the risk of prostate cancer alter in life.
