Experts are saying that recent proposal by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force suggesting that fewer men undergo PSA testing each year may be be waranted, but worry that many individuals may miss the real meaning behind the proposal.
Early this month, the government committee said that too many men were receiving PSA tests to check for prostate cancer. The group also said that the test is an invaluable tool for detecting potentially harmful growths in their early stages.
The key is to make sure that the right individuals are being tested. Based on family history and other lifestyle factors it can be relatively easy for doctors to determine which individuals are at risk and should be tested and which have a low likelihood of developing cancer.
"I would hate to think men read a headline that says 'PSA No Good' and decide to never get a PSA (test)," Dr. Gerard Andriole told the St. Louis Beacon. "Because there are some men who really need a PSA. The announcement, the way it came out, was a little bit of a disservice. We have to have a more nuanced approach to who gets screening. It's the high risk men who need it."
