PSA testing is one of the most effective means of determining a man's prostate cancer risk, according to a new study out of the Mayo Clinic.
The researchers found that results of PSA testing accurately predict whether a man will require a prostate biopsy and whether or not that biopsy will reveal the presence of prostate cancer. The findings were reported at a recent meeting of the American Urological Association.
Results from the study may help settle some of the controversy surrounding the PSA test. Few people doubt the procedure's value as a predictive tool. However, some experts have pointed out that it may lead to overdiagnosis and treatment for tumors that may never become dangerous. The findings indicate that it may not predict prostate cancer on its own, but it may indicate a need for further testing.
"One outstanding question has been the PSA test's value as a predictor of the need for a biopsy and future development of low-risk cancer,'' said lead researcher Dr. Jeffrey Karnes. "Our study found a clear link between the test and these next steps in the prostate cancer continuum of care."
