The vast majority of urologists feel that PSA testing is an invaluable tool for detecting prostate cancer early and treating effectively, according to a recent survey.
The findings come on the heels of a landmark ruling by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which recommended against regular PSA testing for most healthy men. The decision was immediately met with skepticism from the medical community.
In the new survey, nearly all urologists and 60 percent of general internists disagreed with the new government recommendations and said that the PSA test should continue to play a role in regular preventative care, according to U.S. News and World Report, which also conducted the study.
"If you argue that you should not use PSA testing at all in [men without symptoms], you're essentially saying you don't want to find prostate cancer at a curable stage," Dr. Samir Taneja told the news source.
More than 223,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, only 29,000 men die from the condition, largely thanks to early detection.
