For decades, public health officials have warned individuals about the dangers posed by HIV and AIDS. While the diseases are still a very serious problem, some are now saying that encouraging people to seek hepatitis C testing may actually be more important.
This is because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that deaths from hepatitis infections now outnumber deaths form HIV infection.
During the study period, which ran from 1999 to 2007, the agency found that deaths from HIV actually declined, while deaths caused by hepatitis infections increased, eventually outnumbering HIV mortalities.
The researchers said that it may be possible reallocate resources toward awareness campaigns that increase the public's willingness to consider hepatitis C testing and treatment.
"Without reducing allocation of resources that have diminished HIV deaths, we think a commitment to detect and treat chronic hepatitis C will markedly improve the growing wave of disability and death from this under-appreciated viral infection," said Scott Holmberg, who led the investigation.
