Individuals who have recently engaged in unprotected sex may benefit from talking to their doctor about STD testing, particularly if they found their partner on an online dating site. Experts say this new tool for finding a hook-up may increase the risk of the spread of infections.
Pam Walker, the director of the St. Louis Health Department, told CBS News that the pace of online relationships is spread up. This may mean that two individuals jump into a sexual relationship before they necessarily know each other very well. Additionally, the possibility for multiple sexual partners is increased.
"You don't have to spend a week in a bar to find somebody you're comfortable with," Walker told the news source. "People are doing it online and they're doing it faster."
She added that young African Americans appear to be at the highest risk of contracting chlamydia and gonorrhea, as 90 percent of new cases of these infections detected in St. Louis occur in these individuals.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that regular STD testing among sexual active, high-risk individuals is among the best ways to contain the spread of infections.
