Coffee may improve health of liver disease patients

Category: Liver Diseases

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, is the leading cause of liver damage, but new research suggests that a few cups of coffee per day may be enough to improve the liver panel test scores of individuals with the condition.

NAFLD is a growing public health concern. It is a common consequence of obesity, which continues to rise in prevalence. More people currently suffer from liver disease as a result of NAFLD than from hepatitis B and C. Previous studies have suggested that the caffeine in coffee may slow the liver damage associated with the condition.

In order to determine the full effects of coffee, researchers from the Brook Army Medical Center surveyed more than 300 individuals who previously took part in a study of NAFLD. The present investigation asked participants about their typical coffee consumption.

The results showed that that those who had more moderate cases of NAFLD or steatohepatitis, a common result of a fatty liver, tended to drink more coffee each day than those with advanced diseases.

"Patients with NASH may benefit from moderate coffee consumption that decreases risk of advanced fibrosis," said lead researcher Stephen Harrison.
