Sugar consumption is known to contribute to obesity. However, a new paper published in the journal Nature suggests that it may have toxic effects beyond being high in calories, and that this may lead to unhealthy liver panel test results.
Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, suggested that society take steps to control and regulate the consumption of sugar much in the same way it does with alcohol and tobacco. This could lead to a major reduction in chronic diseases, including liver disease.
The team wrote that sugar is generally perceived as nothing more than empty calories that, when consumed in excess, can lead to obesity. However, the effects of sugar may be far more sinister than this, as studies have shown that it can disrupt hormone signaling and lead to liver damage.
"As long as the public thinks that sugar is just 'empty calories,' we have no chance in solving this," said lead researcher Robert Lustig.
The authors suggested that society develop educational programs that alert individuals to the true health effects of excessive sugar consumption and take steps to control its use.
