Consumption of trans fat declines

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

The amount of trans fat found in the average American's blood is decreasing, according to a new report. The situation could have a positive impact on the cholesterol test scores of many people.

Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that blood levels of trans fat decreased by 58 percent from 2000 to 2009. The type of fat is known to be a prominent risk factor for high cholesterol levels and heart disease.

The decrease in blood levels of trans fat is largely a product of regulations that went into effect in 2006 requiring food manufacturers to indicate on labels how much trans fat various products contained, the officials said.

Christopher Portier, the director of the CDC's National Center on Environmental Health, said that efforts to educate the public are paying off and that these programs should be continued in order to contribute to further health improvements.

"The 58 percent decline shows substantial progress that should help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in adults," Portier said.
