Women who experienced certain health complications during their pregnancy may benefit from talking to their doctor about cholesterol testing. A new study indicates that these individuals may face a higher lifetime risk of heart diseases.
Researchers from the University of Bristol in the UK tracked the health of more than 3,400 women over an 18-year period starting when they became pregnant. The findings showed that those who develop high blood pressure or gestational diabetes were much more likely to be diagnosed with heart disease during the study period.
Preeclampsia, a term for pregnancy-related high blood pressure, was associated with a 31 percent increased risk of heart disease, while gestational diabetes was linked to 26 percent increased risk.
The researchers said the findings could serve to help doctors identify individuals who are most likely to develop heart disease. This may enable them to recommend lifestyle interventions or medications to address their risk factors.
