Individuals who have been exposed to high levels of bisphenol A (BPA) throughout their lives may benefit from cholesterol testing. New evidence suggests that this common chemical may predispose a person to developing heart disease.
A team of researchers from several British academic institutions analyzed urine samples collected from more than 1,600 individuals over a 10-year period. The results showed that those who had the highest levels of BPA in their systems were significantly more likely to develop heart disease during the study period.
BPA is commonly used in plastics and canned food containers. However, numerous studies have been published in recent years suggesting that it may be linked to cardiovascular and metabolic problems.
With the publication of the new findings, the researchers said it is time for governments and public health agencies to conduct full-scale investigations into the health effects of BPA. Depending on the findings, it could be time to ban the use of the chemical.
Until then, individuals who have used products containing BPA may want to talk to their physician about cholesterol testing.
