Drinking sugar-sweetened beverages like soda everyday may lead to worse cholesterol tests for men. A new study has shown that individuals who consume these drinks on a daily basis are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with heart disease.
The results are based on a 22-year study of nearly 43,000 men. During this period, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health surveyed men about their diet and general health. The results showed that those who drank sugar-sweetened beverages on a daily basis were 20 percent more likely to be diagnosed with heart disease.
Furthermore, they tended to have lower levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol and higher levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation in the cardiovascular system. This protein has been linked to heart attack and stroke risk.
"This study adds to the growing evidence that sugary beverages are detrimental to cardiovascular health," said Frank B. Hu, who led the study. "Certainly, it provides strong justification for reducing sugary beverage consumption among patients, and more importantly, in the general population."
