Research suggests nothing beats a fiber-rich diet for lowering cholesterol

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

There are a number of ways individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results may be able to improve their heart health. There are always statin medications, which have been proven to be a safe and effective way to manage cholesterol. However, individuals may want to start with some dietary improvements.

Consuming more fiber may be the most effective way to lower cholesterol levels naturally. Numerous studies have linked this nutrient to improved heart health.

The Mayo Clinic states that oatmeal is one of the best sources of fiber. Just a half cup of oats contains 6 grams of fiber. This is about 25 percent of the recommended daily allowance of the nutrient. Alternatively, many fruits contain high levels of fiber. Apples, bananas and pears are particularly rich sources.

While medications provide quick and effective results, natural methods for lowering cholesterol may be preferable in the long-run. Statin medications, even though they are generally very safe, can carry some risk of side effects. However, a healthy diet that is full of fiber has nothing but upside.
