Many people lack understanding of the dangers of cholesterol

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Cholesterol testing can play an important role in supporting overall health, but many people who are at risk for cardiovascular complications do not pursue this screening because they have a lack of understanding of how cholesterol affects their well-being. Individuals should improve their knowledge about the dangers of cholesterol in order to support well-being, experts say.

Dr. Praveen Arla, the Bullitt County Health Department medical director, recently wrote in the Courier-Journal that the human body requires a certain amount of cholesterol. This runs counter to the perception that cholesterol is always bad. However, people run into health problems when they begin consuming more cholesterol than their body needs through their diet.

In order to limit the amount of cholesterol consumed through food, people should try to avoid eating too much saturated fat and trans fat, Dr. Arla wrote. Furthermore, cholesterol testing may alert individuals to any problems before they represent major health risk factors.

About 13 percent of men and 16 percent of women have unhealthy levels of cholesterol, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
