When FSH testing reveals that a woman only has a few years of fertility left, there are steps the individual can take to preserve what reproductive health she has left. Evidence suggests that these strategies may be growing more common.
The New York Times recently reported that many elderly mothers and fathers are paying to have their adult daughters' eggs frozen for use at a later time. The news is indicative of how rapidly fertility-preserving treatments are growing in popularity.
Despite the fact that egg freezing is still considered largely experimental, costs anywhere from $8,000 to $18,000 and offers no guarantee of success, many families now view it as a viable option when a woman decides to delay pregnancy, the news source reports.
Today, many women delay getting pregnant to pursue careers or financial security. The average age of first pregnancy has steadily risen to a 30-year high of 25.1 years in 2002, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As women wait for long to have children, FSH testing to assess fertility levels has never been more important.
