In advance of National HIV Testing Day, the advocacy group Greater Than AIDS has teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to encourage individuals to consider STD testing for the virus in order to learn their status.
The group pointed out that about 20 percent of people who are currently infected with HIV are unaware. Furthermore, about one-third learn of their infection so late that they develop AIDS within one year of diagnosis. Early treatment can prevent the disease from progressing, but relatively few have this opportunity.
"Despite overwhelming evidence that early diagnosis and treatment play an important role both in the health of those who are positive and in reducing the spread of HIV, many Americans at highest risk for infection still have not been tested," said Tina Hoff, a senior vice president at the Kaiser Permanente Foundation, which has partnered with Greater Than AIDS to produce the message.
She added that the campaign is seeking to eliminate the stigma that surrounds HIV testing. If more people view getting screened as a normal part of healthcare, rates are likely to go up.
