High doses of vitamin D may help older adults avoid experiencing fractures, according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The findings suggest that seniors may want to consider blood testing to determine if they could benefit from boosting their vitamin D levels.
In the study, researchers from Tufts University analyzed the findings of 11 previously published investigations. Other studies of this nature have failed to show a correlation between vitamin D supplementation and improved bone health.
However, the researchers behind the current review said their study was different because it looked at the outcomes associated with actual vitamin D consumption, rather outcomes associated with the amount of vitamin D study groups were assigned to take.
The results showed that seniors who consumed 800 international units of vitamin D per day were 30 percent less likely to fracture a hip and 14 percent less likely to break another bone than those who consumed less than this amount.
"Our results make a compelling contribution to the existing data on Vitamin D and fracture risk in men and women age 65 and older," said lead researcher Heike Bischoff-Ferrari.
