The 2012 University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health revealed that the two biggest concerns that adults have for kids' health are a lack of physical activity and the ubiquity of childhood obesity. These findings may have implications for youngsters who undergo a blood test for cardiovascular risk factors.
"Childhood obesity remains a top concern, and adults know it is certainly linked to lack of exercise," said researcher Matthew Davis M.D., M.A.P.P. "The strong perception that lack of exercise is a threat to children's health may reflect effective recent public health messages from programs such as First Lady Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move' campaign."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity increases a child's risk of having hypertension, high levels of cholesterol and type 2 diabetes - all of which can hurt cardiovascular health. In the future, obese youngsters may also be more likely to develop cancer.
Other major health concerns for kids, suggested by the poll, included drug abuse, bullying, teen pregnancy, internet safety and child abuse. The results highlight the importance of public health prevention programs, according to the researchers.
Parents who are worried about their children's cardiovascular risks can send for a blood test to measure factors such as glucose and cholesterol levels.
