Recently, a team of Swedish researchers found that early and frequent breast cancer testing cuts rates of the disease by up to 31 percent. Experts are saying that the findings of the study are now simply confirming what they have been saying about the importance of cancer testing for years.
U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson said that the findings should play a crucial role in guiding future national policy decision regarding making breast cancer testing available and accessible for more women. Given the important role early detection can play, the government should protect women's right to obtain screening.
"With over 40,000 Americans dying from breast cancer last year alone, early detection is critical to change this sad reality," she said. "I will continue to work with groups like the Susan G. Komen Foundation to ensure access to mammograms and early detection screening to help win the fight against cancer."
Experts have recommended for many years that women talk to their doctors about breast cancer testing, yet many individuals still have not sought care. Risk factors for the condition include advanced age and a family history of tumors.
