Many cancer survivors continue to struggle with poor health years after treatment

Category: Cancer Detection and Tumor Markers

A positive cancer test may pose a greater long-term risk to a person's health than it threatens their immediate well-being. A new study shows that many cancer survivors struggle with poor health for years following treatment.

A team of researchers from Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland found 45 percent of cancer survivors report physical and mental health problems years after their treatment is finished. Furthermore, 40 percent said they have unmet healthcare needs.

The team said their findings show there is a clear need for improved cancer treatment and services. While survival rates have been increasing in recent years, the fact that so many people continue to struggle with poor health suggests that post-treatment care has not made the same kinds of strides.

"The fact that 40 percent say they have unmet needs has significant implications for the future design and provision of cancer services," said lead researcher Heather Monteverde. "The number of people living with cancer is growing every year so it is essential changes are made now to avoid serious problems in the future."
