New service seeks to connect rural doctors to latest cancer research

Category: Cancer Detection and Tumor Markers

Cancer testing has shown that residents of rural areas are much more likely to develop and die from the disease. Some experts have speculated that doctors in these areas may not be keeping up with the latest developments in oncological care.

Studies have shown that doctors from rural areas are less likely to travel the great distance that may be required to attend medical conferences. Additionally, access to medical review publications may be more limited in sparsely populated areas.

In an effort to help more physicians overcome these obstacles and improve cancer care in rural areas, a team of researchers from Yeshiva University recently launched a new online service to help connect rural doctors to the latest cancer research.

"It is estimated that 85 percent of cancer care in the United States is delivered at the community level, far from the academic and research programs that change definitions of best care," said T.S. Ravikumar, who is involved in the initiative. "Programs like this e-newsletter can further support the education of those practitioners who are treating the majority of oncology patients in the U.S. today."
