New research from Denmark may have established a link between infection by salmonella or campylobacter gastroenteritis, two common causes of food poisoning, and the eventual development of inflammatory bowel disease.
The study was presented at this year's Digestive Disease Week, the largest international gathering of physicians and researchers in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery.
Investigators looked at the Danish population over a period of 15 years and found that three times as many patients who had been exposed to bacteria later developed IBD as those who had not been exposed.
About 1.4 million Americans have some kind of IBD.
"Our research has important implications for food safety and disease prevention. If we can reduce and prevent the spread of food bacteria and infections, we may reduce or even largely eliminate IBD in the long term," said Dr Nielsen Henrik professor of infectious diseases at Aalborg Hospital in Denmark.
The exact causes of IBD have been the subject of some debate. Genetics seem to play a role, but research has suggested environmental or dietary triggers, abnormal blood vessels, infections and immune-system overreaction and even psychology as potential risk factors.
