African Americans may have a set of genetic alterations that raise their risk of receiving a positive HbA1c test for type 2 diabetes, according to a new study out of Wake Forest University.
The researchers found after studying the genetic material of various racial groups that African Americans have a certain set of genes that converts omega-6 fatty acids - the unhealthy type of fat found in red meat and processed foods - into long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. These molecules signal inflammatory reactions, which damage tissue, making it more prone to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
The observation of this complex chain of reactions within the body stemming from genetic factors may help explain why there is a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes among African Americans. This racial group is disproportionately affected by the disease, but until now, it was unclear exactly why.
Additionally, the researchers said that their findings may contribute to a growing understanding of how dietary choices affect individuals’ disease risk. This is important, given the growing rates of chronic illnesses, including diabetes.
