When people are admitted into the hospital for trauma, it may be wise for the hospital staff to administer a blood test as a way to safely treat the patient.
That's the finding in a new study that is online and scheduled to appear in the October print issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
Dr Michael F. Fleming, a professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, was a corresponding author of the study and said that a blood test may be useful because alcohol use was associated with higher rates of various accidents, falls and injuries.
"In addition, patients processed through emergency may not be aware of their injury severity until the alcohol is out of their system, and in persons suffering from head trauma, it is difficult to assess changes in mental status," Fleming said.
The research also stated that people who abuse alcohol will often deny doing so, which could prove hazardous to their hospital stay if their attending nurses and doctors aren't aware of their condition.
Even for people who aren't in the hospital, getting a lab test online to periodically check on their condition is a good way to stay informed about their health.
