AIDS disproportionately affects black men who have sex with men

Category: HIV

The Black AIDS Institute, an HIV/AIDS think tank that is focused on the African American community, released a report that indicated that the rate of HIV infections among black men who have sex with men (MSM) is alarming. These findings underscore the importance of anonymous STD testing.

According to the report, black MSM account for only about one in every 500 Americans. However, this population makes up for 25 percent of new HIV infections. Furthermore, black MSM are less likely to be alive three years after an HIV diagnosis, compared to Latino or white MSM.

"Current policies do not adequately address the unique needs of black MSM in America. Local and national leaders must remain vigilant in the fight against AIDS, especially in the black community, which continues to carry the heaviest burden," Congresswoman Maxine Waters said in a statement. "Unless we change the way we do business, we cannot reverse the epidemic."

The report suggests that health leaders take several approaches to tackling this problem. Among them are introducing pre-exposure prophylaxis and building sustainable community infrastructure. Increasing access to anonymous STD testing, preventive services and treatment is also important.
