Rapper discusses importance of HIV testing in new song

Category: HIV

It may seem like an odd pronouncement from a rap song, but the new single "I Got AIDS" from artist Lil B comes with a powerful message: seek HIV testing as soon as possible.

The rapper told MTV that many young men think it's cool to have unprotected sex with multiple partners. However, many of these individuals are likely unaware of the risks associated with the practice. His new song seeks to address these misconceptions.

"I have a lot of songs that have sexual lyrics, and I want to tell people the truth about sexuality and to make sure that they get tested if they’re sexually active," he told the news source. "I want people to know, if you are doing that, you are at high risk of getting AIDS or other STDs and you need to make sure you get tested."

Some commentators have suggested that the title of the single may be simply a ploy to get attention. Regardless of the rapper's real intent, his message does jibe with what most public health experts say about the dangers of unprotected sex and the importance of HIV testing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that regular screening of all sexually active individuals is one of the best ways to control the spread of HIV.
