Americans' cholesterol levels show signs of dropping

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Average cholesterol levels are declining in the U.S., according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cholesterol testing initiatives may have played a role in the improvement.

According to the numbers, just 13.4 percent of people had high cholesterol in 2009 to 2010. This is down from the 18.3 percent who had unhealthy cholesterol levels in 1999 to 2000. Women and Hispanics tended to have the highest cholesterol levels.

The figures showed that cholesterol testing rates remained mostly constant from the latter half of the decade through 2010. Nearly 70 percent of adults were screened for heart health problems during this time, which is not far from the goal of most public health agencies of getting 80 percent tested.

The authors of the report said that continuing this positive trend in testing could help the nation achieve goals set out in the Million Hearts challenge, which is an initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services that seeks to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years.
